Welcome Back to School - Freshman and New to IHS Orientation 2024 - 2025 (1)

Adam Desautels, Principal

What We Want For You

Goal for Graduates of IHS - I want all students to graduate from Inglemoor High School as good people, motivated about their next step, and ready to contribute to our society as informed and active citizens.

To achieve this goal, we have high expectations, focus on building positive relationships with individual students, and provide structure and supports for students to meet our expectations as we believe that every student can meet their, and our goals.

Parent Partnership will be very important in helping our staff work with your student.

What This Looks Like

  • Teachers will be working very closely with students early on to get to know them and help students get off to a good start.
  • Teachers are understanding, particularly if students explain what’s going on and why they may need extra support/time/anything else. Self Advocacy is key!
  • We expect students to be in class, on time, every period of every day. Being absent or late can be a significant barrier to your success.
  • We expect students to put away cell phones (in backpack) at the beginning of each period. If you can use them, teachers will tell you directly to take them out.
  • Bring your laptop (school issued) every day, charged. You’ll need this.

Campus Culture

Now that you’re in High School, you’re going to be expected to behave like young adults. This means that we ask you to be mindful of impact on others before you make decisions.

Think about what you say and do. We do not tolerate in any form:

  • Hate Speech
  • Bullying, Harassment or Intimidation of any kind (including over Social Media)
  • Physical confrontations/altercations (use your words to come to agreements)
  • Threats of any kind
  • Other violations of IHS and NSD rules.

IHS prides itself on being a safe space for every student. It takes all of us to maintain it.

As IHS Vikings, you are joining a culture where students are:

  • Inclusive of everyone regardless of differences.
  • Welcoming and friendly to all students and staff.
  • Reasonable and collaborative (working together) with one another and staff.
  • Empowered to use your voice to enact change.
  • The adults at this school want to hear from you!
  • Prideful about our school and campus and want to make it the best it can be.

A large high school can feel like moving to a big city. There are different groups of people, changing dynamics, etc. To function like a positive community, it’s important that everyone find and pursue their interests.

So, get involved! Join clubs, join sports, find friend groups with similar interests and invite others in.

Students who have connections to their school are much more likely to graduate and meet their academic goals.

Check out the clubs fair outside after this presentation.

Questions?Contact bstewart2@nsd.org, igarcia@nsd.org or ekowalski@nsd.org

Things to Know - Traffic

If driving, get to school early and pick up late (15+ minutes on either side).

Be patient.

Don’t park and wait in nearby neighborhoods (we want our neighbors to be happy)

Follow the directions for drop-off and pick up. 1 person making a shortcut holds everyone else back.

Finding Resources

In High School, we work hard to help students build self-advocacy. Students are expected to learn to ask their teachers when they have questions or need help, go to the right places to access resources that we have, etc.

We highly encourage you to work with your student to:

  • Help them identify people to talk to
  • Decide what to say/ask and what to do to find solutions if there are conflicts
  • Follow up with your child regarding results + determining next steps.

Attendance is SO Important!

Regular attendance (attending more than 90% of the time) is crucial to a positive high school experience.

Frequent absences are associated with poor health outcomes and mental health impacts.

Frequent absences in high school can shape adulthood.

Missing 10% or more of the school year (over 2 days per month) can negatively impact a student’s academic success.

By 9th grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.

Communication is Key

E-newsletter/ParentSquare/Website - Important and regular information from IHS

Upcoming Events:

  • School picture day - September 6th, during English class
  • Open House: September 19th - 5:50 optional welcome in the main gym. Sessions start with period 1 at 6:00. Many teachers will be reaching out to parents directly to find out more about your child.

Clubs

Involvement in a club or sport drastically increases a student’s high school experience. It also makes it more likely students will attend regularly, succeed in their classes, and graduate on time.

This is a great way to find others with similar interests, create lasting friendships, and find your people in such a big school.

Students can access clubs during the school day on Wednesdays and Thursdays. We will have a clubs fair during the first two full weeks of the school year. Please encourage your child to join at least one club this year!

We cannot wait to meet you!
