Every year, Macy’s puts on some of New York City’s most spectacular events. The Thanksgiving Day Parade,for instance, marks the unofficial start of the holiday season. (The parade began in 1924 by Macy’s immigrant employees seeking to celebrate American customs.)Every year hundreds of thousands of spectators line the parade route to watch the iconic display of balloons, floats and marchers, while millions more tune in to catch it live on TV. A little later in the year, visitors and locals gather around the flagship to view its dazzling holiday window displays. Macy’s was the first department store to feature holiday window displays, which started in 1864 when the store installed lighted window displays to catch the attention of passersby. The store offers two tours: the Retail 101 Tour, which gives visitors background knowledge on the business aspects of the flagship, and the History Tour,during which visitors learn all about the origins of Macy’s, its various owners, and how it laid the foundation for modern-day department stores. You’ll walk away with a discount pass—not to mention a wealth of fun facts! For example, Macy’s was the first major retailer to hold a New York City liquor license, and that four of the store’s escalators are the original wooden ones installed in 1920.
