How To Catch A Blue Widow
Big Fish represent a huge challenge for players in Final Fantasy 14. They can be incredibly sneaky, often requiring very specific weather patterns, complex mooch chains, or incredibly short time frames to catch. This frustration might only be compounded by an in-game event that nudges you in the direction of a difficult fish to catch.

Here's everything you need to know about Fashion Accessories in FFXIV, including a breakdown of each one and how to get it.
The Blue Widow is one such fish. Found in the North Shroud, you'll need to be a pretty accomplished Fisher to even attempt to catch this devious prize. But for the final week of The Second Hunt for Genesis, which runs until June 24, you'll get a nice haul of Tomestones for doing so.
Preparations For Catching A Blue Widow
As a Big Fish, you'll need to make some crucial preparations and meet some requirements before catching a Blue Widow. Big Fish are notable for the following reasons:
- They have a high Gathering stat requirement for you to have even a chance to catch it.
- They can only be found in one location.
- They can only be found at certain times, sometimes coinciding with weather conditions.
For your quest to catch a Blue Widow, you will require a Gathering stat of at least 349. Depending on your Fisher level, you can reach this in a few different ways. We recommend these easy methods that require being only level 53 (if you can handle a little crafting or purchase from the Market Board) or level 55:
Level 55 Gear | Level 53 Gear |
---|---|
Dark Chestnut Fishing Rod Dhalmelskin Vest Dhalmelskin Gloves Ramie Trousers of Gathering | Cedar Fishing Rod Wyvernskin Jerkin Holy Rainbow Work Gloves Wyvernskin Culottes |
These items at normal quality will give you 368 Gathering. | These items at normal quality will give you 338 Gathering. Making the Wyvernskin Jacket, the Cedar Fishing Rod, or both the Gloves and the Trousers High-Quality will give you enough Gathering. Either craft them, or purchase them from the Market Board. |
All of these items can be purchased from Norlaise (X:7.1, Y:10.2) and Evrardoux (X:6.4, Y:9.6) in The Pillars in Ishgard. |

It's also important to use the right bait to catch a Blue Widow. The best bait for this fish is a Floating Minnow. These can be purchased from the Junkmongers in any residential area or from the following merchants:
- Admiranda in Old Gridania (X:14.4, Y:10)
- Yoyobasa in Ul'dah - The Steps of Thal (X:14.2, Y:11.2)
- Syneyhil in Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks (X:6.3, Y:12.0)
How To Find A Blue Widow
As with all Big Fish, the Blue Widow has very specific requirements before showing up and can only be found in one fishing hole in the entire game.
Blue Widow | |
---|---|
Location | North Shroud - Murmer Rills |
Requirements | 09:00 - 14:00 Eorzean Time |
An easy way to know you're fishing in the right spot is to Teleport to the North Shroud aetheryte and then head east from Fallgourd Float until you reach a bridge.
Thankfully, the Blue Widow has a consistent and predictable requirement - it simply shows up for five hours per in-game day, from 09:00 in the morning to 14:00. All that you have to do is wait for this time slot and head to the fishing hole.
How To Catch A Blue Widow
Once you have a Floating Minnow equipped as your bait and you're at the right fishing hole at the right time, the only thing left to do is cast your line into the waters and pray that a Blue Widow arrives!
Some tips for making the most of your time slots are as follows:
- Use Chum to shorten the length of time it takes for the fish to bite.
- Don't bother using Patience; save your GP for Chum.
- Bring Cordials to recover your GP quickly.
- Don't bother trying to catch any ! or !! fish. The Blue Widow is a !!! fish. Letting the other fish get away will save you time in the long run.
Once you've caught the Blue Widow, make sure you open your Mogpendium to redeem the catch for some Tomestones!
